The 2025 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) once again delivered groundbreaking innovations across the technology sector. Among the industry experts exploring the event, Randy Johnston, co-founder of K2 Enterprises and a leading technology thought leader, attended alongside his associate Brian Tankersley.
In a recent episode of The Woodard Report Podcast, Johnston shared key highlights and insights from CES 2025, focusing on emerging trends, standout products and the implications for businesses, particularly in accounting, bookkeeping and tax services.
The spectacle of CES 2025
Every year, CES serves as a showcase for both cutting-edge and experimental technology. This year, SK Hynix took the spotlight with an elaborate video wall mimicking a futuristic data center, blending aesthetics reminiscent of both Star Trek and Star Wars.
While visually impressive, some major brands, including Nikon and Canon, surprised attendees by omitting their traditional product displays. Johnston noted the lack of cameras from these manufacturers, a departure from past showcases where they prominently featured video and still photography equipment.
Still, several notable innovations stood out. NST introduced a foldable, multi-panel laptop display that attaches to the back of a traditional laptop, providing additional screens for enhanced productivity. This device caters to professionals who frequently travel and require multiple monitors to maintain efficiency.
CES 2025 reinforced the ever-growing role of AI, automation, and cybersecurity in both business and personal technology. From AI-powered laptops and assistive devices to advanced meeting tools and home office security solutions, the innovations showcased this year highlight the importance of staying ahead of technological trends.
For accounting and business professionals, these advancements present both opportunities and challenges. By embracing the right technologies while maintaining a strong focus on security and efficiency, businesses can remain competitive in an increasingly digital world.
AI-driven computing and smart accessories
AI remains a dominant force in technology. HP unveiled a range of AI-powered laptops and workstations that integrate advanced security features.
The latest iteration of HP’s SureView technology prevents unauthorized viewing of screens by automatically activating privacy filters when additional observers are detected. Lenovo, on the other hand, introduced the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 rollable laptop, offering a unique vertical screen layout for enhanced document viewing.
HP also made significant strides in docking station technology. Their latest docking station, priced at $170, includes Bluetooth-sensing capabilities that automatically configure devices based on the user’s environment. Unlike previous docking stations, which received mixed reviews, this new model appears to be a robust and user-friendly solution.
Advancements in meeting technology and productivity tools
Virtual meetings have become a permanent fixture in the modern business environment. RICO’s Meeting 360 camera system enhances remote collaboration by providing a full 360-degree view of the conference room while dynamically adjusting audio focus based on the speaker's location. Priced at $900, it is a more cost-effective alternative to similar solutions such as the Owl camera.
For professionals who require noise isolation, the BUBL (Bubble) soundproof room offers a portable and efficient solution. Designed for temporary or permanent office use, it provides a quiet environment for meetings, client calls, or focused work sessions.
Meanwhile, ViewSonic introduced wireless monitors and a battery-powered projector. Their M1 Plus projector, retailing at $400, is compact yet capable of running for three hours on a single charge, making it ideal for business presentations and entertainment purposes alike.
Assistive technologies and AI for good
Beyond business and entertainment, CES 2025 featured innovative technologies aimed at improving lives.
Lumen, a Denmark-based company, introduced an AI-powered assistive device for the visually impaired. This head-worn device provides haptic feedback to guide users through their surroundings, eliminating the need for traditional seeing-eye dogs. The company plans to distribute the device globally at no cost to users, demonstrating how AI can be leveraged for social impact.
Another innovation was GrandPad, a tablet designed for elderly users. This secure device offers easy access to video calls, emails and essential online services, with 24/7 U.S.-based customer support. GrandPad exemplifies how technology can bridge generational gaps and ensure that senior citizens remain digitally connected while maintaining security and ease of use.
The future of secure home offices
As remote work continues to evolve, cybersecurity remains a top concern. MyVelo introduced a $200 firewall-enabled streaming device that doubles as a wireless access point. This device enhances home network security while providing high-quality 4K streaming, making it a valuable addition to home office setups.
Johnston also highlighted the shift towards universal connectivity standards, particularly the transition from USB-A to USB-C. With the European Union already mandating USB-C as the standard for electronic devices, this change will likely influence technology policies worldwide.
The road ahead: AI and business applications
AI's impact on business operations was a recurring theme at CES 2025. Johnston emphasized the importance of understanding how AI can improve efficiency while ensuring the protection of sensitive client data. He pointed out that many AI vendors still struggle with adequate data security measures, urging business leaders to remain vigilant in evaluating AI solutions.
In addition to his CES recap, Johnston will be presenting an in-depth tech update at Scaling New Heights, where he will explore AI adoption strategies and data privacy best practices. His sessions will provide attendees with actionable insights to navigate the evolving technological landscape responsibly and effectively.
