After Intuit acquired TSheets, the popular time-tracking solution that has since become QuickBooks Time, several former TSheets employees saw an opportunity to build something new—Saturn, a cloud-based time-tracking tool designed to offer businesses a simple, transparent, and efficient way to track work hours.

Overview of Saturn's time-tracking tool

Saturn is designed to simplify time tracking for businesses of all sizes. Its cloud-based platform allows employees to log their work hours from any device with an internet connection, eliminating the need for traditional paper timecards and reducing administrative overhead.

Key features

  • Cross-device compatibility: Saturn operates seamlessly on modern computers, tablets and smartphones without requiring additional applications or browser extensions. This flexibility ensures that employees can easily record their time regardless of their preferred device.
  • User-friendly interface: The platform emphasizes simplicity, allowing employees to focus on their work rather than navigating complex time-tracking systems. The straightforward design facilitates quick adoption and consistent use.
  • Kiosk mode: For workplaces that utilize shared devices, Saturn offers a kiosk mode, transforming any tablet or computer into a digital time clock. This feature is particularly beneficial for environments where employees do not have individual devices.
  • Real-time tracking and reporting: Managers have access to real-time data on hours tracked, enabling proactive monitoring and decision-making. When it's time to process payroll, time balances can be exported in Excel (CSV) or PDF formats, facilitating seamless integration with existing payroll systems.

The birth of Saturn

The company was founded last fall in Boise, Idaho, by four builders/designers, several of whom used to work for TSheets, including Loren Morris.

"We started talking to people who had been using TSheets and realized there was a space there that Intuit was no longer serving very well," Morris said.

The goal then became to create a software that's user-friendly, efficient and affordable.

Saturn adopts a transparent, usage-based pricing structure. Businesses are billed at $5 per active user per month, plus tax, ensuring that companies only pay for the team members who track time during that period.

This model eliminates base fees and hidden charges, making it a cost-effective solution for organizations seeking flexibility in their time-tracking expenses.

Implementation and user experience

Implementing Saturn is designed to be straightforward, with no need to install additional software or extensions. Employees can access the platform via web browsers on their preferred devices, facilitating quick onboarding and minimal disruption to existing workflows.

The user experience is centered around ease of use, with intuitive navigation and minimalistic design elements that reduce the learning curve, especially for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) new to SAAS programs.

The kiosk mode further enhances accessibility in environments where shared devices are common, ensuring that all employees can log their time efficiently.

Potential considerations

While Saturn offers a range of features aimed at simplifying time tracking and payroll processes, businesses with more complex needs—such as advanced project management, detailed analytics, or extensive third-party integrations—may require additional functionalities not currently provided by Saturn.

The company, however, is working on expanding its offerings. Already underway is a mobile app for both Android and IOS, integration with QuickBooks, and work reports that are more task and project specific. Morris provided no timetable on any of the three developments but advises everyone to stay tuned.

The right option?

Saturn presents a compelling option for businesses seeking a straightforward, cloud-based time tracking tool for payroll processes. Its emphasis on user-friendliness, real-time tracking and transparent pricing makes it a noteworthy contender in the time tracking software market.

As with any business tool, potential users should assess their specific requirements and consider a trial period to determine if Saturn aligns with their operational needs.
